Wind Turbine Controls Engineer

Gulf Wind Technology is seeking a Wind Turbine Controls Engineer to join our engineering team in Hickory, North Carolina. To help our team grow and tackle new projects, we’re looking for a Wind Turbine Controls Engineer who is excited to tackle new and innovative wind energy technology projects. Specifically, the Controls Engineer will lead the development of wind turbine control methods and tools to optimize turbine and farm performance and reduce system loads. 

Job description

As a member of Gulf Wind Technology’s Research and Development Team, the Controls Engineer will play a key role in the aero-elastic design and analysis of new and existing blades. You will have a variety of opportunities to learn new skills while leading projects for customers, leaning into your own expertise to help the team succeed. At Gulf Wind Technology you will be responsible for:  

  • Collaborating with an interdisciplinary design team to integrate control systems into wind turbine simulation environment, and to conduct simulations to validate control system functionality. 
  • Create and refine enhanced SCADA analysis tools to help improve the performance and reliability of wind turbine systems. 
  • Build new engineering tools, methods, codes, and scripts that improve the accuracy, capability, and speed of deliverables. 
  • Manage cross functional projects, including developing a business case, coordinating team member activities, managing project budgets and customer reporting. 
  • Participate in field performance, loads, and vibration measurements to gather firsthand understanding of blade and turbine operation. 

Required qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical or computer engineering or a related field. 
  • Knowledge or experience of loads modeling processes and tools, such as OpenFAST, Bladed, Flex, Adams, or similar tools. 
  • A humble approach to your own knowledge and skillsets. We value team members who willingly share their expertise with the team, but also own their own learning and development plans. 
  • An engaged and committed team member, who is equally excited to facilitate a meeting or discussion, partner one on one with cross-functional team members or work collaboratively to achieve the team goals.

Desired characteristics

  • Previous relevant experience, preferably in the wind industry, but candidates with translatable experience are encouraged to apply. 
  • Experience with modal analysis, loads measurements, or machine learning methods is beneficial.
